Dad
Sad, but the inner sentiments of the "bereaved," as reflected in this story, are unfortunately, much too often true. The only thing that didn't ring true was the impromptu chess story at the eulogy. I just doubt that someone could ad lib the story on the spur of the moment. Better if he would have had it planned. All in all, sadly poignant.

A well written, pensive story that left me feeling sad.
The writer paints his characters as ones who just seem to be passing through; not really emotionally involved with the deceased, save, perhaps, the stranger. That, in giving the eulogy, the son was reduced to fabricating the chess story, proved he had nothing of substance he could, or wanted, to recall about his relationship with his father.
Even as they left the scene, the son's thought soon turned to how nice his girlfriend looked in black. Somehow, I fear that this same scenario, with variances, is repeated daily throughout the world.

This is probably the best thing I've read on Authorstand
Very evocative, strongly atmospheric, tells a story we all have in us but don"t know it. If you've ever been to a funeral at least, and especially if you've ever given the eulogy at one. A short, miniature gem.

This left an odd effect on me after reading it
It bounced around in my head for days. It's very different, in a good way, from most of the other stuff here, and really belongs in a literary magazine or professional short story anthology. Has this author written stuff that's been published at large?

Very pensive, interesting
A very contemplative story that left me feeling pensive and slightly melancholy at the end. It's like an aperitif with a slightly tangy, slightly bitter-sweet finish. A good, short read that leaves you reflecting.
